Challenge

Cargill’s vision to streamline authentication across its dual BigCommerce storefronts uncovered several technical and operational challenges that impacted security, user experience, and identity governance.

Key Challenges Cargill had faced

Cargill operated two online stores which serve different user groups consisting of employees and customers. Users must access different systems to log in because there exists no unified method to monitor access permissions. This was what Cargill was going through.

The company was trying to keep security policies the same on both Azure AD and Okta while using both of them.

Without a central system, their IT team was always putting out fires and managing user access by hand, which was bad for security and made users angry.

  • Managing multiple stores was messy: Managing multiple online stores creates difficulties in monitoring user access rights to specific content. The different storefronts operated with separate user groups who needed distinct permission levels.
  • Mixed Identity Systems Create Chaos: It was hard to combine Azure AD and Okta into one BigCommerce environment, and it was like trying to get two people who speak different languages to talk.
  • Provisioning Limitations: When Cargill found out about Okta's SCIM limits, they encountered a blocker. This meant that they had to make their own APIs just to safely sync customer data with their systems.
  • No Single Source of Truth for User Management: Without a single identity management system, every time a user changed, they had to manually update several systems. This method took a long time and left security holes that kept the IT team up at night.
  • Growing Pressure to Lock Things Down: Cargill needed a solution that could scale easily without compromising security or adding more hassle for their team. Threats and internal compliance requirements were prioritized than before, it was necessary to scale security with the business.


Our Solutions and Deployment

Cargill required an authentication management system that would protect their future operations by handling multiple BigCommerce storefronts through Azure AD and Okta authentication. The company selected miniOrange as their provider because of its adaptable identity architecture and its ability to handle hybrid environments. The solution provided by miniOrange integrated SSO with SCIM provisioning and custom API integrations to enable smooth access and synchronization between two storefronts and identity providers.

Dual Storefront SSO Configuration

Cargill’s Consulting Corner and Feed Retailer storefronts required distinct SSO setups for employees and customers. miniOrange configured SAML-based SSO with Azure AD for internal users and Okta for external customers, enabling secure, frictionless login across both portals.


Custom SCIM & API-Based Provisioning

Due to licensing constraints with Okta SCIM, miniOrange built a tailored API-based provisioning system for syncing customer attributes to BigCommerce. Meanwhile, SCIM provisioning for internal users was set up via Azure AD to ensure smooth onboarding and offboarding processes.


Centralized Identity Federation

miniOrange established a central identity federation layer to manage authentication flows, routing login requests to the appropriate IdP (Azure AD or Okta) based on the storefront and user type. This eliminated the need for redundant configurations and maintained security consistency.


Improved Access Governance & Compliance

miniOrange came ready With centralized control and automated provisioning, Cargill gained better visibility into user access across storefronts. The solution aligned with Cargill’s internal security policies and reduced risks associated with manual user management.


Scalability and Future-Proofing

The architecture was designed to support additional storefronts and user groups, ensuring that Cargill can scale its identity operations effortlessly as the business grows.

Cargill was finally able to fix their complicated login scenario after using miniOrange's identification solution. They used to have to deal with a lot of different systems and passwords that never worked well. Now, everything works together without any problems.
